One of my favourite things about the bookish community is getting new book recommendations. I’m always on the lookout for something that sounds up my alley, or even sounds like something I wouldn’t normally try, and you folks are seriously the BEST at convincing me to read books you’ve loved! Whether these book recommendations have come directly from friends or bloggers, or whether I’ve just seen a post about it, my TBR is always as tall as Mt Everest.
So today I thought I’d share which books you all have recommended to me this year, and what I thought of them! And maybe in the meantime, I can add a few of these to your TBR as well. Enjoy!
Holy CRAP. I read The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo last year after literally EVERYONE on booktube and Twitter were raving about it, and it’s honestly one of the best books I’ve ever read. So naturally, I was looking forward to reading what Taylor Jenkins Reid was going to write next. But I added Daisy Jones & The Six to my TBR after I heard Emmmabooks on booktube raving about it—and then proceeded to download the audiobook and listen to it in a day. IT WAS AMAZING. Seriously, if you haven’t read this book yet, you must. The audiobook is particularly fantastic!
QUEER WITCHES. What more could I ask for? After seeing the cover revealed on Twitter, I’d seen this book float around the interwebs for a while before I decided to pick it up. The person who really convinced me to give it a go was Star on bookstagram. She reads so many queer books and she has really good taste, so I always trust her on book recommendations. And sure enough, I absolutely adored this one! It was cute and sapphic and a little bit spooky—perfect for Halloween.
This is another one I’d been curious about for a while, simply because of that stunning cover. And because I’m always on the look-out for more spooky books to read around Halloween! Shaun, my friend and the co-host of a book club we run together, let me borrow his audiobook copy of this novel after telling me it was really whimsical. And it was… really different to what I expected! There were more ‘zombies’ and less magic than anticipated, and while I didn’t love this book, I’m still glad I gave it a go.
I feel like I’ve had this book on my shelf for years. And finally—finally!—my friend Bianca and co-host of The YA Room confined me to pick up a copy. It’s one of her all-time favourite books, and it did not disappoint. I mean, how could it? It’s a middle grade novel about a demon living inside a boy, and it gives off major Halloween vibes, and it’s just of of the best things I’ve read all year. I really need to get my life in order and read the second book!
I saw Alice Oseman raving about this book on her Instagram Stories a while back, and seeing as she’s one of my favourite authors, I knew I had to give this book a go! I thought seeing as I love her work so, so much, of course I would love what she loves. But unfortunately… it pains me to say that this book wasn’t really for me. It’s quite poetic at times in how it speaks about loneliness and wanting to disappear, but I just would have liked a little more plot and a few more twists. It just didn’t make me want to keep reading, sadly!
THIS BOOK WAS AMAZING! It totally slipped by me when it was released, probably because it didn’t come out this year and I didn’t really read a lot of middle grade prior to 2019. Scandalous, I know! There’s so much great MG out there! And this book definitely fits that category. This one was recommended to me by my friend Lucie, and it was seriously one of the most cute, funny books I’ve ever read. It’s about this strange town and a group of friends trying to save an orchard, and it’s wonderful. Now I’m recommending it to you all!
Have you read any of these books? What did you think of them? What’s one book you had recommended to you this year that you LOVED? Let me know!
