So you just finished the finale of Game of Thrones—now what? How do you move on from a show that’s been the backbone of pop culture for basically the past decade? It’s hard, especially when the finale probably didn’t give you everything you wanted, and is definitely leaving you with an unexpected and unshifting feeling of loss. Like this big part of all of us has just… ended. Endings are weird, right?
But what can you do to try and fill that void in your life now, you ask? Well, I have some book recommendations based on your favourite character in Game of Thrones! Whether you’re a lover of assassins, morally grey characters can’t help but root for, or just girls wielding weapons in stunning dresses, then I have some great picks you should add to your TBR!
dun dun dun dun dun dun dun dun duuuuuuuuun
Arya Stark | A Darker Shade of Magic
HELL. YES. Arya is easily my favourite character in Game of Thrones—I mean, she’s an assassin, she can wield a sword like a badass, and she’s basically a pirate. If only she were MY WIFE as well. Ahh, a girl can dream. But Arya definitely reminded me of Lila Bard in the Shades of Magic series. If you haven’t read these yet, I URGE YOU TO DO SO. Seriously. Lila is mine though. Back off.
Jon Snow | An Affair of Poisons
Oh Jon, my beautiful bastard. Even when he was covered in blood and looked like he hadn’t slept in a month, he was still the prettiest person on screen. I don’t know about you, but I’m definitely craving some more stories about royal bastards—and it looks like An Affair of Poisons might fit the box! I haven’t read this one yet, but it’s about a boy who has to become the prince he was never meant to be when the king is assassinated, and it sounds excellent. I’M TOTALLY PICTURING THIS GUY AS KIT AND I WILL NOT APOLOGISE FOR THAT.
Sansa Stark | The Lady’s Guide to Petticoats & Piracy
Remember in Season 1 when you said you hated Sansa, Past Sarah? Remember that? Well, I CERTAINLY LOVE HER NOW. Oh my goodness, my sweet summer child went through so much in the countless series, and she came out stronger than ever. EVERYONE SHOULD ASPIRE TO BE MORE LIKE SANSA. She could slit my throat and I’d thank her for it. And you know what other book has a badass female protagonist? The Lady’s Guide to Petticoats & Piracy! If you haven’t read it already despite all the hype, I highly recommend it.
Samwell Tarly | Strange the Dreamer
Isn’t Sam just, like, the most pure character on Game of Thrones? I LOVE HIM SO MUCH. He’s the Ravenpuff hero we all deserved. He’s just out there reading books that can save the Seven Kingdoms, fighting White Walkers, and hugging Jon, and I’m so here for it. He also reminded me of a certain other librarian who has to go on a journey into the unknown—a boy named Lazlo Strange from Strange the Dreamer. I’d love to read a fanfic where Lazlo and Sam meet, please and thank you.
Joffrey Baratheon | Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone
Firstly, if Joffrey is your favourite character, I’m slightly worried about you. But hey! This is a judgement-free zone. You do you. However, I will say that Joffrey really gave me Draco vibes. You know, if Draco were just a tad more murderous and had no soul. I think it must also be the blonde hair… Anyway, I think these two would get along wonderfully in another universe, so go ahead and read Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone if you just can’t get enough of Joffrey!
Margaery Tyrell | The Belles
Holy heck, isn’t Margaery just the most stunning person you’ve ever laid eyes on? Seriously, I love her so much. Not only does she wear dresses that I’m totally envious of, but she also does a damn good job of manipulating the people around her to get what she wants. I STAN. In that way, Margaery gave me The Belles vibes—wearing pretty dresses and fighting back against the evil people in charge. Can I get a HELL YEAH?!
Daenerys Targaryen | And I Darken
Say what you will about Daenerys, but I think we’d make a really good couple. No more wars please, just wholesome days spent soaring through valleys on the back of Drogon and nights learning new languages and eating hearts. You know, cute couple stuff. She might be a bit brutal at times, but you know who else is? Our fave, Lady Dragwlya in And I Darken. She’s got to be ruthless to survive, and she refuses to do what the men in her life tell her to do. I’M DESPERATE FOR A REREAD NOW.
Renly Baratheon | The Gilded Wolves
Need more queers in your fantasy? THE GILDED WOLVES HAS GOT YOUR BACK. Oh my goodness, it’s just delightful. What Season 8 was lacking (besides a coherent plot a lot of the time, let’s be real) was queer characters. So if you’re anything like me and are looking for more fantasy books with queer characters, you need to add The Gilded Wolves to your TBR! SO MUCH SWOON.
Who’s your favourite character in Game of Thrones? Which season was your favourite? What did you think of the last episode? I’d love to know!
Beware, for the comment section is dark and full of spoilers.
