I JUST FINISHED WATCHING BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER FOR THE FIRST TIME. EVER. I know right?! I’m about twenty years late to the party, but oh my god, it was absolutely incredible. I seriously haven’t fell in love with a show like I did with Buffy for a very long time, and I know I’ll be rewatching it so much in future. THE CHARACTERS WERE INCREDIBLE. THE PLOT WAS GRIPPING. THE EPISODES WERE FLAWLESS. Everything about this show makes me want to scream about it from the rooftops.
So that’s what I’m doing today! I thought there’s no better way to celebrate finishing watching such an iconic show like Buffy than to do a book tag about it! This one is inspired by Book Slaying’s book tag, but I changed some of the prompts and added some of my own just to showcase some of my other favourite characters. If you’re a fan of Buffy, I’d love you to do this book tag as well! Enjoy!
Buffy is seriously the coolest protagonist of all time. SERIOUSLY. I want to be her when I grow up. Not only is she strong and powerful and can slay like five bazillion vampires all at once, she’s also an incredible sister and a friend that any of us would be lucky to have. She has a heart of gold.
But another character who lives a double life is Eliza from Eliza and Her Monsters! I absolutely loved seeing her create her gorgeous webcomic and want to keep it a secret from anyone, and ahh. It’s just such a glorious novel. If you enjoyed Radio Silence, definitely give that one a go! It will give you allll the feels.
HELLOOOOO, BADASS WITCHES (aka my sexuality). I have the biggest crush on Willow OF ALL TIME. Seriously. I don’t think I’ve ever been more in love with a fictional character. She’s awkward at times, but she’s also extremely powerful and literally has the ability to wipe out the whole world. She is the definition of badass.
And you know who else is? MILA FROM UNDEAD GIRL GANG. She’s seriously Wicca goals. I mean, she does accidentally bring back two people from the dead that she didn’t mean to, and they are kind-of-not-really zombies? But hey, no one’s perfect. If there’s any witch I’d like to see take over the world on a day Willow is busy, it would be Mila.
Xander is honestly the greatest. I LOVE HIM SO MUCH. He might not be very useful in saving the world, but he sure has some funny things to say about the impending apocalypse. I absolutely love his sense of humour, as well as his friendship with Buffy and Willow. We all need a Xander in our lives.
You know who else we all need in our lives? HYPNOS. He blackmails a gang of people into being his friends, and hey, we love him for it. He’s flamboyant and funny, and he’s like the human embodiment of glitter: he dazzles the room, makes everything fabulous, and hangs around even when you don’t want him to. Hynos had me laughing out loud on public transport reading The Gilded Wolves.
Dawn did take a little bit of warming up to, but gosh, I absolutely loved her in the end. She’s the type of character I wouldn’t even hesitate in taking a bullet for. And the relationship between her and Buffy was ADORABLE. Sure, they got on each other’s nerves at times and didn’t always agree, but hey, that’s what siblings do.
Well, that’s what Monty and Felicity do in The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue do anyway! I swear they never see eye-to-eye, and it’s hilarious. They poke fun at each other and piss each other off, but at the end of the day, they’d be willing to sacrifice everything for the other. AND I THINK THAT’S ABSOLUTELY ADORABLE.
Oh my god, I am not a fan of Angel. I disliked him from the very beginning, but I don’t think that’s really my fault. He has about as much personality as a brick wall (but I’m still totally planning on watching Angel). He’s broody, thinks he always knows what’s best, and ugh, I’m just totally Team Spike.
Another character who is extremely broody is Baz from Carry On! Who also happens to be a vampire! I also could have said Edward for this answer – it must run in their blood. Do vamps even have blood? Moving on. Not only did I love how broody he was, but I also loooved the romance. Make sure you read it before Wayward Son comes out!
SPIKE IS MY FAVOURITE CHARACTER EVER. He’s sarcastic and slightly murderous, and I absolutely love him. His relationship with Buffy is complicated (it’s not always easy being a vampire in love with the Slayer), but damn, he has a great redemption arc. His speeches have had me sobbing many a time throughout the series, and his quips have me laughing uncontrollably. SPIKE IS JUST THE BEST.
There’s no question as to who my favourite bookish character with a redemption arc is, but I’m not going to say it now for fear of spoilers! If you’ve read the Shades of Magic series, you’ll know who I mean. I LOVE THEM SO MUCH. So many feels.
OH MY GOODNESS. Tara and Willow… I just can’t. Those two were the cutest couple to ever walk on this earth and no romance will ever live up to how cute they were together. SO MUCH LOVE FOR MY TWO QUEER WITCHES. I have screamed “kiss” at my TV many a time while watching scenes where they’re together on screen.
And another one of my favourite f/f romances is that of Evelyn Hugo and Celia. Evelyn is a bisexual woman of colour who’s an actress and is forced to hide her sexuality in a heteronormative society. BE PREPARED FOR ALL THE TEARS, FOLKS. The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo is one of the most spectacular books I’ve ever read. Pick it up!
ANDREW WAS SERIOUSLY MY FAVOURITE CHARACTER OF SEASON SEVEN. I just couldn’t get enough of him! His vlogging episode? SOLID. GOLD. 100% would subscribe to his channel. I just loved how he was so intent on being evil, but was just so funny? Ugh so much love for my hopeless ex-evil mastermind.
So another wannabe villain that I absolutely adore is Kate Harker from This Savage Song! I mean, she starts off the novel by burning down her school chapel to try and please her father. She desperately wants to be evil and do him proud, but she’s just a cinnamon roll at heart and I love her SO MUCH.
I LOVE FAITH. She’s badass and cool and pretty in an I’ll-rip-your-throat-out kind of way. I totally think we’d get along, and I’m not just saying that because I wish she was my girlfriend. I really loved getting to know her in Buffy and I heard she’s in Angel quite a bit, so I CANNOT WAIT.
I also adore Felicity from The Lady’s Guide to Petticoats and Piracy! She is one fierce queer pirate who’s determined to be a doctor, and I just think the world would be a much better place if we all tried to be a bit more like Felicity. I love her confidence and how she approaches everything with such determination, and she’s seriously one of the best YA role models I’ve ever encountered.
Joyce and I started off on rocky terms, I will admit. But by season two, she was basically my adoptive mother. I LOVE HER SO MUCH. She might not have been super supportive of Buffy in the beginning, but eventually she came around and would do everything she possibly could to try and make Sunnydale a safer place and ensure Buffy was going to be okay. IT WAS SO CUTE.
But if Joyce couldn’t adopt me, then I’d definitely want Frances’s mum from Radio Silence to. SHE’S INCREDIBLE. I mean, she just chills with Frances and watches Studio Ghibli films with her in their onesies. MUM GOALS. She’s also supportive and kind, and ahh, I just want a hug from her.
Giles is the Watcher, AKA a British librarian who knows basically everything and acts as a parental figure to Buffy and her friends. He’s the kind of person you’d go to for solutions to all of your problems, including, but not limited to, how to banish demons and close the Hellmouth.
Another fictional parental figure I absolutely love is Jupiter North, a man who totally gives me the Doctor from Doctor Who vibes. I loved how weird and whacky he was! He was definitely my favourite character in Nevermoor – and I desperately need to read Wundersmith!
Have you watched Buffy the Vampire Slayer? Who’s your favourite character? What’s your ultimate Buffy ship? Let’s scream about all these things together!
