5 Books I’m Currently #Obsessed With

It’s a known fact that October is the best time of the year for book lovers… or the worst, if we’re thinking about our bank accounts and looming TBRs. Yes, it’s release season! The time where new books are flying at us from left, right, and centre, and we’re left desperately trying to keep up. And even though it can be stressful trying to juggle all these amazing releases, it’s undoubtedly one of the most exciting times of the year.

With the start of the spooky season comes all the exciting books that we’re all desperate to get our hands on! It’s like it’s the last rush for publishers to get all there exciting releases out into the world before Christmas, and even though October is a month that breaks my bank, I’m happy to drink terrible instant coffee instead of extravagant Starbucks frappuccinos if it means getting my hands on an anticipated release.

So today I want to fangirl about some of the most excellent books I’ve read recently! I’m still getting through my TBR pile and I’m sure there will be a whole lot more that I want to scream about, but in the meantime, here’s five of them that deserve to be on your shelves too.

An Absolutely Remarkable Thing

As a fan of Vlogbrothers since I was 14 and as someone who listens to Dear Hank and John religiously, of course I was beyond excited to get my hands on a copy of An Absolutely Remarkable Thing. And as the title suggests, it really was remarkable! This was a book that hooked me from the very beginning, not letting me go until after I’d turned the final page. I just loved the whole narrative about alien androids and fame and the perils of social media, and it was just a fun read. It’s going to sound a bit weird (but then again, An Absolutely Remarkable Thing is a pretty weird book), but I’d say this one is basically Sleeping Giants meets I Was Born for This. Definitely one of my favourite novels of the year!

I honestly wasn’t expecting to love this book as much as I did, but it was such a fun, enjoyable read! I didn’t love the author’s other series, The Potion Diaries, but Jinxed was right up my alley. Complete with tech elements, a talking cat, and an ambitious protagonist, this book was everything I could have hoped for and more. While Jinxed reads a bit younger than the protagonist’s age, people who don’t mind younger YA novels and want something enjoyable they can just lose themselves in will adore Jinxed.

Sadie has been on my radar since about the start of the year, when I saw countless of my favourite authors reading ARCs and screaming about how good it is. But wow, I didn’t know just how amazing it was going to be until I started read it. I actually listened to this one on audio, which I’d highly recommend! As Sadie is told in the format of a true crime podcast about a missing girl, it has a full cast and sound effects and even a jingle. It’s undoubtedly one of the best audiobooks I’ve listened to in terms of production value and narrative style, and the story itself was just so well-written and really quite harrowing. It’s not an uplifting read, but it was definitely one of my favourites of this year.

City of Ghosts

Another one of my most anticipated reads of 2018 — and it definitely didn’t let me down! Anyone who’s been on my blog longer than three minutes can probably tell I’m a massive fan of Victoria Schwab and ghosts, so this book was really a dream come true for me. I mean, it’s set in Edinburgh, the protagonist’s best friend is a ghost, and her parents are paranormal investigators! If you’re looking for a spooky book to read this Halloween, City of Ghosts should definitely be on your TBR. And plus — it’s perfect for anyone who loves Victoria’s existing work or for those that are fans of Buzzfeed Unsolved!

The Lady’s Guide to Petticoats & Piracy

Ahh… another highly anticipated book of the year! The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice & Virtue was one of my favourite reads of last year, and I’ve probably read it about eight times since then. I mean, it’s really the perfect book to read when you’re in need of a laugh or when you’re going on an adventure. I’ve listened to the audiobook so many times that Monty has started narrating my life in my head. It’s pretty great. And because Felicity is my soulmate, how could I not be excited to get my hands on this one as well? Let me tell you this: it’s just as excellent as the first one, if not better! I have so much love for Felicity and it was great to get to know a whole new cast of characters in her second adventure. What a queen.

What books have you been loving recently? Have you read any of these five? Do you have any of these on your TBR? I’d love to know!

Thanks to Hachette Australia and Simon & Schuster Australia for providing me with copies of An Absolutely Remarkable Thing and Jinxed respectively in exchange for an honest review!

  1. Sadie was so good!! And I haven’t read The Lady’s Guide, but my copy arrived earlier this month and I can’t wait to read it.

  2. Omg what other seasons are release seasons because this is really like the worst and greatest time of year to be a reader 😂😂 you’ve really sold me on Sadie so I might give that audiobook a go! Great post ❤️

  3. omg Sadie is what got me back into reading after not picking up a book for like four months. The audiobook was INCREDIBLE. It felt so real. I can’t wait to read An Absolutely Remarkable Thing, City of Ghosts and The Lady’s Guide. Really glad you enjoyed them all!!

  4. I cannot wait to read Sadie! I so want to give the audiobook a chance. It sounds epic. 😍 I miss the last podcast– The Black Tapes, that I listened to. It might fill the hollow it left!

I’m currently reading Stalking Jack the Ripper, and I’m obsessed so far! 💛
