Which Stereotypical YA Character Are You?

YA can be so full of tropes, right? I could probably list more books that have love triangles in them or series with hate-to-love than the birthdays of my closest friends. Oops.

But have you ever wondered which stereotypical YA character you’d be? I’ve listed five of the most common YA character tropes below, and I’m sure you’ll be able to see a bit of yourself in at least one of them. It’s time for YA fiction to be #exposed.

There’s also a quiz to determine which type of character you really are!

Damsel in Distress

You’re a little helpless sometimes, but only in the Elizabeth Schuyler sense. While people might feel the need to save you from setting your house on fire when you attempt to cook pasta or when you’re putting your health at risk by buying another coffee, you’re an independent person who don’t need no man to protect you. You’re tougher than you look and while you’re not confrontational, you won’t hesitate to stand up for yourself and those closest to you. You might be underestimated, but you’ll go on to rule the world. Just you wait.

Cup of Coffee

Brooding Person with a Dark Past

You’re a coffee-addict and believe there’s no such thing as owning too much black clothing. You never get enough sleep and some people think you’re a satanist, but that’s just another rumour that contributes to how misunderstood you are. If people actually took the time to get to know you, they’d realise that you’re just hesitant of getting attached to people because of things that have happened in your past. But there’s always someone that makes you want to open up and put your faith in humanity again. Oh, and you’ve probably been blasting Panic! at the Disco and Fall Out Boy since 2008. Duh.

Laptop

The Gay Best Friend

You’re fashionable, fierce, and sassy—and let’s face it, probably queer. You love being the centre of attention and can’t help the crowds of friends you accumulate. You’re probably broke because you’re always out shopping, going to see musicals, or treating your straight friends to a much-needed makeover. You call American Horror Story camp can name all the competitors on RuPaul’s Drag Race in order of elimination. You’re never going to sashay away.

cm8 (17)

Rebel with a Heart of Gold

You can often seem a little standoffish and cold at times, but beneath the snark and leather jacket, you’re a massive softie. You’re adventurous and always looking for something new to try, whether that be bungie-jumping or planning a trip to a place you’ve never been before. Although people might find you a little intimidating sometimes, you’re one of the kindest people on this earth and anyone who takes the time to get to know you will see that. You really do have a heart of gold.

3

Cute Nerdy Person Who Doesn’t Know They’re Attractive

You’re an introvert, tea-lover and avid reader who’s always got their nose in a book. You choose comfy sweaters and sneakers over heels, and you’d rather stay in and watch that new show on Netflix than go out partying. Crowds? Eww. People might think you’re shy just because you immerse yourself in fictional worlds, but you’re not really. You have a great sense of humour and you’ve definitely got a bit of Hufflepuff inside you. But most importantly, you’re a kind, loyal friend, and you also get your fair share of romantic interest.

Quiz

How do you like to start your morning?

a) Going for a run! There’s no better way to start the day than with adrenaline pumping through your veins.

c) Making a bowl of fruit salad and feeding my pets! I love animals.

d) By getting ready to some show tunes and spending three hours picking out the fiercest outfit. Shanté, you stay.

a) Sport! You love spending time outside and trying different activities you’ve never done before.

b) English or Literature! I love reading and writing about my favourite and most thought-provoking books.

c) Art! I love drawing and painting.

d) Drama, duh! The Hairspray musical is coming up and I can’t wait to flaunt my stuff on stage. Glitter will probably be involved.

e) None of them. High school is overrated.

How would your friends describe you?

a) Adventurous, snarky, and always up for a challenge.

b) Quiet around people I don’t really know, but I’m extremely passionate about what I do and always have the best book recommendations.

e) What friends? I scare people off with my dark clothing and my resting I’ll-stab-you-if-you-get-too-close face.

What’s your coffee order?

a) Just a latte or a cappuccino—but I mostly like to save my money for my next adventure. Coffee isn’t a necessity.

b) Tea for me, please!

c) I’ve spilled coffee on myself more times than I’d care to mention, so now I tend to go for an iced latte! That way I don’t have the risk of getting burned by my Starbucks.

d) A unicorn frappuccino! Oh, they don’t do those anymore? I’ll take a pumpkin spice anything, please.

e) I like my coffee like I like my nights—long, dark, and impossible to sleep through.

What does your perfect day look like?

a) Exploring somewhere I haven’t been before with my closest friends. They’re the only ones who know the real me—and I’d protect them with my life.

b) It’s raining outside, and I’m curled up on the couch with my favourite book and a cup of tea. Probably my pet too.

c) Going to the park or the beach. I love spending some alone time in nature after a busy week.

d) Catching up with my friends, watching RuPaul’s Drag Race, and pretending my life’s a musical and I’m the lead.

e) Staying inside on my laptop with the curtains closed. The outside world isn’t for me. They just don’t understand me, you know?

Congratulations! You’re officially the person who doesn’t fit a stereotype and thus gets killed off! Don’t take it personally—you’re the most realistic, three-dimensional character in the narrative. So what if you don’t serve the authors’ purpose! Good chances are that you’ll be mourned and thought of highly. You’re the person who’s dead but everyone’s sad. That’s definitely a compliment.

  2. Oh, this was such a fun post, Sarah! I loved reading it and finding myself nodding along to certain characteristics! According to your quiz, I’m mainly a cute nerdy person who doesnt know they’re attractive but also brooding person with a dark past. And I think that might almost be scarily accurate. xD

  3. I got Cute Nerdy Person Who Doesn’t Know They’re Attractive haha The nerdy person part is right and most of the descriptions are right, but I think I am fairly realistic in knowing where my looks stand! Great post 🙂

  4. I completely agree that YA is the most stereotypical genre😂 I answered b for everything, which is pretty accurate description of me!

  6. Wowza!!! What a fun post!!! 🙂 I took your test and I had a tie of mostly b’s and e’s and one lonely a 😂 When I read your descriptions both the b’s and e’s fit so I’m going with I’m both lol not I refuse to be killed off before I muddy some waters out in this fictional world 😜😘

  7. This is such a fun a creative post. I am totally a damsel in distress hahaha. I know these stereotypes get a bad rep but I don’t think they’re all bad, there’s a certain comfort level in feeling like you know the characters at least a little bit because of the stereotypes and I always enjoy seeing an author who can flesh out the stereotypes. Thanks for a great post I’m off to check out the rest of your blog!”
