So I finished Lord of Shadows recently, and it’s safe to say that I have a lot of feelings. Not only did this book have me sobbing by the end, it made me want to sell my soul to get my hands on the next book and make a deal with the devil if it meant my favourite characters would stay safe. After absolutely adoring Lady Midnight, I fell in love with the characters all over again in the second book and was taken on a whirlwind of an adventure, where twists and turns were always right around the corner.
If you’ve read Lord of Shadows, it’s undeniable that there’s both a lot of romance and a lot of death in the narrative. The romance left me swooning and the deaths made me feel as though my own heart were being ripped from my chest. Cassandra Clare makes me feel all the feels, and she definitely didn’t disappoint in her latest instalment of The Dark Artifices.
And so I thought I’d play a little game of Kiss, Marry or Cliff — Shadowhunters edition! If you haven’t seen this thing floating around on the internet or haven’t played it yourself (sometimes it’s called different things: Kiss, Marry or Kill, or more explicit variations), three people or characters are chosen and you have to decide whether you’d kiss them, marry them, or push them off a cliff. All good-naturedly, of course! I asked my friends on Twitter to help me out, and these are some of the names I was given!
Kieran, Mark, Christina
Kiss: Mark. I absolutely loved really getting to know him in Lady Midnight and found him utterly irresistible. Not only does he have that gorgeous faery charm, the scenes with him and his love interest had me swooning. I need him in my life.
Marry: Christina. She’s such a lovely character with a heart of gold, and I can definitely imagine spending the rest of my life with her. She’s the kind of person I could never get sick of. And she’s pretty badass too!
Cliff: Kieran. He really got on my nerves at times and I know that, for the most part, he meant well, but I just couldn’t bare kissing him or living with him. Although faeries are pretty hot, it’s Mark that I prefer — and I think we could all agree. Sorry, Kieran.
Magnus, Alec, Izzy
Kiss: Izzy. Wow, that girl is hot. Who wouldn’t jump at the opportunity to have a little snog with her? She’s completely badass, can fight in high heels, and will do anything to protect those she loves. Gosh, I’m swooning just thinking about her!
Marry: Magnus. I mean, who wouldn’t want Magnus in their life? Not only would his warlock powers be really useful on a daily basis for anything I needed, but he’d add more glitter to my life, and that’s something I need right now. I feel like we’d definitely get along.
Cliff: Alec. I feel terrible, but Alec, you have to go! He did get on my nerves a bit in the first few Moral Instruments books, and I guess I haven’t fully forgiven him. He is fiercely loyal and brave, but unfortunately, I couldn’t save him this time!
Julian, Jace, Will
Kiss: Will. I was always Team Will, rather than Team Jem, and he’s been one of my bookish crushes for ages! My favourite type of boys in books are those dark, brooding ones with hearts of gold, and that’s Will all over.
Marry: Julian. He’s just such a sweetie, isn’t he? I can totally imagine him bringing me pancakes and us going to the beach. He seems like such an easy person to love, and I can imagine spending my life with him.
Cliff: Jace. I actually want to cry, but sacrifices have to be made. Jace was one of my first bookish crushes and I loved how sarcastic and witty he is, but I just think that would be a little tiring long-term. I will always love you, Jace.
Izzy, Clary, Maia
Kiss: Izzy. Again, for the same reasons as before! She’s irresistible, I’m telling you.
Marry: Maia. I actually love Maia so much. She’s fierce and loyal, and isn’t afraid to stand up for what she believes in. I loved getting to know her in the books, and I definitely need more of her in my life. I can definitely imagine us living together and going on adventures and wow, I’m totally swooning right now.
Cliff: Clary. Sorry, Clary. You were okay in the books, but the TV version has tainted my memory of you. I hope you understand!
Valentine, Simon, Sebastian
Kiss: Sebastian. It might seem a little absurd, but I always had a bit of a soft spot for Sebastian. Sure, he was completely evil and a psychopath, but there was that one page in The Mortal Instruments where I could see a glimmer of hope for him. So yeah, I wouldn’t really mind kissing him.
Marry: Simon. Duh! He’s such an adorkable munchkin, and I can definitely see us getting married. He’s funny and nerdy and basically someone that I would be able to get along really well with. What a cutie!
Cliff: Valentine. Okay, this one had to be pretty obvious. I could see a tiny piece of goodness inside of Sebastian, but Valentine is dead to me. Nothing about him is salvageable. #SorryNotSorry.
Ultimately, I couldn’t have wished for a better second book in the Dark Artifices series. There was mystery, romance, and great diverse representation – and we were reunited with some old favourites! I’ll never get sick of the Shadowhunter universe and I can’t wait to read the next book in this brilliant series. If you haven’t read these books yet, I highly recommend checking them out!
Have you read Lord of Shadows yet? Which of Cassandra Clare’s series is your favourite? Do you agree with my choices for who I’d kiss, marry, or cliff? Who’s your favourite character in The Dark Artifices? I’d love to know!
Thanks to Simon & Schuster Australia for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review!
Lord of Shadows by Cassandra Clare
A Shadowhunter’s life is bound by duty. Constrained by honor. The word of a Shadowhunter is a solemn pledge, and no vow is more sacred than the vow that binds parabatai, warrior partners—sworn to fight together, die together, but never to fall in love.
Emma Carstairs has learned that the love she shares with her parabatai, Julian Blackthorn, isn’t just forbidden—it could destroy them both. She knows she should run from Julian. But how can she when the Blackthorns are threatened by enemies on all sides?
Their only hope is the Black Volume of the Dead, a spell book of terrible power. Everyone wants it. Only the Blackthorns can find it. Spurred on by a dark bargain with the Seelie Queen, Emma; her best friend, Cristina; and Mark and Julian Blackthorn journey into the Courts of Faerie, where glittering revels hide bloody danger and no promise can be trusted. Meanwhile, rising tension between Shadowhunters and Downworlders has produced the Cohort, an extremist group of Shadowhunters dedicated to registering Downworlders and “unsuitable” Nephilim. They’ll do anything in their power to expose Julian’s secrets and take the Los Angeles Institute for their own.
When Downworlders turn against the Clave, a new threat rises in the form of the Lord of Shadows—the Unseelie King, who sends his greatest warriors to slaughter those with Blackthorn blood and seize the Black Volume. As dangers close in, Julian devises a risky scheme that depends on the cooperation of an unpredictable enemy. But success may come with a price he and Emma cannot even imagine, one that will bring with it a reckoning of blood that could have repercussions for everyone and everything they hold dear.
